Bright Idea- Making Beds

October 20, 2011

Written by Contributing Writer, Sarah Farthing

It didn’t take very many crib sheet changes for my husband and I to decide there had to be a better way.  We have twins and while they did sleep together for about their first 5 months, they eventually moved to separate cribs and so we had two sets of sheets to change by either removing the mattress or contorting our bodies to reach each corner until they moved into twin beds.

A great solution for us was to double up on sheets.  When we finally got those mattresses wrestled out I wasn’t going to stop at one layer!  In the event of a diaper leak or blow out, or a middle of the night/nap upset tummy, all we had to do was pull off the top sheet and the pad we had placed in between the sheet layers and we could all get back to sleep easier and faster and ‘rebuild’ the bed in the morning.

Our boys moved to twin beds before they were 2 and even though it was so much easier to change their sheets after the transition, they were still in diapers and we found it extremely helpful to continue making their beds with layers of sheets like this.

So, with flu season fast approaching, and/or if you have a little one giving up diapers at night!, consider this helpful tip.  You don’t have to think about it often and oh my goodness is it a life saver those few times you realize you really needed it!

AND, I wouldn’t have to fold fitted sheets! Fantastic.

This is a great idea! We had been wondering what to do now that our son is potty trained and the idea of changing sheets at 3:00 a.m. is not appealing. I think we’re definitely going to give this a try. Where do you get a pad big enough? Our problem is he moves around so much at night that there’s no guarantee he’ll be on it. Sometimes we find him sleeping on his pillow. Literally his body on the pillow.

Also, for the crib we loved the Ultimate Crib Sheet. It snaps around the slats so whenever there’s a bit spit-up or accident, you just rip it off and the sheet is saved. We couldn’t have lived without it for our son. We don’t use it as much for our daughter because she doesn’t have accidents like he did.

The pads we use in between sheets are just the largest absorbent crib pad they sold back when my boys were babies. Our boys never move to the end of the bed so we just leave that as is. If your guy moves around that much I would just use a couple between the sheets-lined up against each other- and if he ends up on the pillow I would either buy cheap pillows (the $4 kind at Walmart) and have a few in storage or get a zippered waterproof pillow case that you put a normal pillow case over but that might be too crinkly for sleeping, you could try it out.
