If you are building a house…

December 30, 2009

There are 5 easy things you can do to have an AWESOME family house:

1. Put a giant slide behind a half-sliding door between your main floor and the basement.

Isn’t this the greatest idea? (I wish it were mine).

2. The living room.

Here’s mine. We NEVER sit in here.

Skip this room altogether and put the square footage elsewhere, like into the family room or closets. Seriously, have you ever sat in it? When we moved in, I wanted to put a ping-pong table in ours, but my efforts were thwarted. Even when we entertain, we never sit in there. Everything centers around the kitchen or the grill.

3. A great kitchen pantry.
My newish house has no walk-in pantry and I’m amazed how many houses forget this necessary room. In the world of Costco (or BJ’s or Sam’s Club), we need room to store all the stuff we need to feed our growing adorables.

4. A utility sink in the laundry room.
Our builder did forget this and yes, we have lots of bathrooms upstairs, but I really don’t want to rinse out poopy pants where people also wash their faces.

5.  A circuit. Here’s ours:

Down the hall...

Through the entry...

pass the kitchen...

pass the kitchen...

and through the family room.

and through the family room.

When we moved into our traditional colonial, we thought the hallway next to our stairs was a waste of space. I couldn’t have been more wrong – it has been invaluable. The resulting circuit pictured above is our raceway, parade route, and for laps. I never realized how much kids love laps. Before bedtime, when we are trying to wrest the last few drops of energy from the adorables, we yell out, “LAPS!” and away they run around and around.  Remove socks for traction!

This made me laugh. O has a circuit as well and it cracks me up how he can go around and around for 20 minutes or more and not get bored.

If you have the flexibility, don’t forget a Christmas tree/decoration closet near where you have your tree
