Little Boy Movie {A Must See}

April 25, 2015

Written by Marykate O’Malley, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne PA

Little Boy is a movie with big questions. Questions that are explored and delicately placed before the viewer to turn over as you follow the Busbee family against the backdrop of World War II. Seen through the eyes of a child, known for his small stature, it is a movie that explores the themes of faith, surrogate fathers, friendship, bigotry, and war.

Little Boy’s childlike faith awakens the child in each of us and through characters woven throughout the movie, conversations about faith are respectfully explored without judgement. Set in an idyllic coastal town in California, every scene looks like a postcard and is beautifully depicted. Little Boy’s determination, and constant devotion to his father, reminds us of the true nature of love.

As a mother, burdened with a lack of choices in family entertainment, Little Boy’s positive messages are a welcome change from the tired tones of demoralizing human dignity, and flashy effects. It is a clean, pure story, told from the heart, delivered to the heart.  I truly can’t recall the last time I cried this much during a movie, so be prepared with tissues. A new age has dawned in family entertainment. An age where as a family we can view a movie together that will leave us with a deeper perspective on life, about what is truly important, what love and faith mean.

Critics are paid to be critics. It is their job, finding fault. And what I think the critics are missing, and what viewers are demanding, is that we are desperate for movies that are uplifting, and speak values of kindness and love, and friendship, and are a light in the darkness.  Little Boy is art intended for the highest standard.

I am deeply grateful there are people dedicated to creating art, not directed at critics, but at people like you and me. People who want to get lost in a beautiful story and find ourselves changed in a radical way. Thank God there are filmmakers creating movies that aren’t for polls, but for the the everyday person. We can find something in each of the characters in our own lives. We all have struggles, we all have felt desperation, we all understand the power of love and how we would do anything for our families. Thank you for movies that personify this message.

See this movie. Take your children, take your parents, and friends, your spouse, your loved ones. This is not a little movie. It is a big one – with impact, and a beautiful message.

“It takes courage to believe”. And it takes courage to go against the grain, and to stand out in the crowd. How wonderful there are people willing to do this for us.
