Things I Say Frequently

September 9, 2014

Written by Marykate O’Malley, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne PA

There are things I say over, and over, and over again. I mix it up to add variety and so it feels like a different message to the receiver which may prompt them to take action. Just call me Clever Mom. Here are some of my most frequently used:

1. Go wash your hands. Please go wash your hands. You need to go back into the bathroom and wash your hands. I didn’t hear the water run, go wash your hands. You must wash your hands. Hands. And sometimes I just wave my hands and make a face like  – “hands”.

2. Brush your teeth. It’s time for bed, go brush your teeth. Did you brush your teeth? I need you to brush your teeth. It is now 8:15 please tell me you brushed your teeth. Brush.your.teeth. And then you say, “Oh. I forgot”. Me: blank expression.

3. You need to eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You must eat breakfast. Did you eat breakfast? You need fuel for the day. Which makes you say fuel is a weird word to use and makes you think of cars and now your stomach feels all strange and you can’t even think about breakfast. You know – fuel….

4. Time to turn off the iPad. No more Minecraft. Do I need to take the iPad? Please turn off the iPad. If I need to tell you again you will loose the iPad. For the day. Hand me the iPad. Thank you. You just lost it. For the day. It will help you to remember the next time. You: glares.

5. Why are we fighting about this? The path to peace is not comparing yourself to others. What is the win win here? You need to let this go. Can we move on. Kids please stop arguing about who learned to tie their shoes at a younger age. Please.stop.arguing.

6. Time to go! Everyone in the car! Let’s go kids! I need you in the car. You can play soccer later. We need to go. Now. We are running late. In the car. Yes, you can go get shoes. No, I have waters in the car. Kids, we need to practice this. When Mom tells you it’s time to go…

7. I love you. I love you to the moon and back. Your Mommy loves you soooooo much. Do you know how much I love you. Mommy loves you. I love you more than you could ever imagine. I love my sweetie pie. Love you!

What are yours?

Yes! and let’s not forget: have you done your homework? Is your homework finished? Is your homework complete and in your backpack? Could you be working ahead right now? Have you studied your math facts/spelling words? etc! 🙂

Love this! 🙂 Too funny. So true. Here’s another: Did you get your lunch? Your lunch is on the counter. Is your lunch in your backpack? Did you forget anything? You don’t want to eat pork fritter today, don’t forget your lunch. *daughter at bus stop* “Sweetie – did you forget something?” as I’m holding her lunch box up. 😉
