You’re Gonna Miss This

March 5, 2013

Put this song on whilst you read…

My Theme Song of late is Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This”.

It’s on constant replay through my head.  You know I love country.

Especially when the adorables try to pour the milk on their cereal by themselves, and instead pour the whole gallon out on the floor.  (Organic, no less).

And then I think: “Miss this???  Are you crazy???”

But I know it’s true – I’m already a little foggy about when they were little, and it was just a few years ago.
(I also spent hours pouring over old photos looking for these I used below…)

If you’re unfamiliar with the song, I’ve included the lyrics below:

She was staring out that window, of that SUV
Complaining, saying I can’t wait to turn 18
She said I’ll make my own money, and I’ll make my own rules
Mamma put the car in park out there in front of the school
Then she kissed her head and said I was just like you

My babies, aged 4.5 and 1.5

You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this

My 3 loves….

Before she knows it she’s a brand new bride
In a one-bedroom apartment, and her daddy stops by
He tells her It’s a nice place
She says It’ll do for now
Starts talking about babies and buying a house
Daddy shakes his head and says Baby just slow down

First day of drop-off summer camp, (= 2 whole hours to myself!) aged 2.75 and 5

‘Cause You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this

Aged 4.75 and 7, just last summer.

Five years later there’s a plumber workin’ on the water heater
Dog’s barkin’, phone’s ringin’
One kid’s cryin’, one kid’s screamin’
She keeps apologizin’
He says they don’t bother me
I’ve got 2 babies of my own
One’s 36, one’s 23
Huh, it’s hard to believe

And here they are now: aged 5 and almost 8!

(makes me weepy)

But you’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna miss this
Yeah, you’re gonna miss this

Many thanks to Trace Adkins for perfectly summing this up!

What are YOU going to miss??

True Story: Every time this song comes on in the car, my husband changes the channel because he doesn’t like me crying! I seriously can’t listen to this song without crying. I know the truth of this in my heart so very much! And funny, I’ve just spent the last couple hours this morning looking back through my old pictures too…sniff, sniff. I keep trying to tell myself the lyrics to this other country song (Alan Jackson’s Remember When) “We won’t be sad, we’ll be glad for all the life we’ve had, and we’ll remember when…” I cry every time with that song too!

Heidi – thanks for making me start off my day with crying!!!! LOL Great song. What am I going to miss? I guess almost everything (except for the housework that went with it, I won’t miss that =) Also doing laundry this morning and was thinking of your earlier post about gathering stuff from pockets and saving it. Thought about doing that years ago and never did. =(
Will miss the small stuff – like pebbles from school playground in his pocket, the smile on his face when I picked him up from school, snuggles in bed, being the one that he turned to all of the time, me being RIGHT (my guy is now 12….and I’m very seldom right now).
What I’m not going to miss…his love….because I know that I have it and will always have it because of the time that we spent together and the memories that we have made. I have given him my time, my attention and my love and in return I will always have his.

Me – I am going to miss all of it. Yes, all. I work on stopping and smelling the roses. And I have to remind myself to take time for a bike rides and game of cards, and reading at night tucked in bed – because time really does go much much much too fast. My sister just visited me with her adorable 2 year old twins and I look at them and feel so nostalgic for that age – library classes, and the playground, feeding the ducks at the park and walks in the stroller. What a gift – and being a “doer” I really have to remind myself that the dishes can wait, and the email and mail. But these little moments will surely pass and not return. Thanks for the reminder – cant hear it enough!
