8 Things Going on With Me…

May 29, 2013

1.  Boden, age 5.5, just finished a season of Flag Football.  While this was infinitely cute for the parents to watch, it was nothing short of heroic for 2 coaches to coordinate 12 Kindergartners (6 on each team) into every single play.  My favorite was watching a coach physically picking the kiddos up and placing them in position, yelling “Stay!” as he moved to position the next player.  Nonetheless, Boden loved it.  Coaches deserved stiff drinks after every game and practice.

2. Without realizing it, I ended up registering Boden, again, age 5 and in Kindergarten, for 4 different sports this spring.  He played 2 days of Tennis, 2 days of Football, 1 day of lacrosse and 1 day of golf.  He was very wiped out every night (and slept rather soundly), but frankly, he enjoyed it.  Whenever someone talks about over-scheduling kiddos, I bow my head and raise my hand.  I am so guilty of this and perhaps I’ll learn for fall.  Perhaps.

3. Sloan, 5 days shy of turning 8(!), broke his thumb earlier this spring.  I wish I had a good story – he broke it making a diving catch, etc – but he was trying to check Boden into the wall whilst they were playing hockey in the basement.  Boden ducked and Sloan went sailing over him full-speed into the wall thumb-first.  I was relieved that Boden hadn’t been the one doing the checking; there might have been endless amounts of resentment.  We did have a really great healing from this: after being told he needed surgery, we sought a second opinion with a specialist in New York City.  The new doctor told us to hold off to see if it healed on its own.  On our return visit (and lots of subsequent prayer) the resulting X-ray showed new bone growth where the bone hadn’t been to straighten itself out.  It was really cool to see this and the specialist thinks it will continue to correct itself without any surgery.  Hooray!

4. However, Sloan missed almost all of his Spring sports.  We did find out that he can write tolerably well with his left hand.  Who knew?

5. We found new renters for our home this summer.  We sojourn to Michigan, Yellowstone and Colorado again for a little over 7 weeks and have found a new lovely family to stay in our home.  They have girls, which makes me giggle as I have virtually nothing for them to play with.  As we’ve done in the past, we clean out closets and drawers and stow it away in the attic.  They just use everything else – including the Running Man’s car.  I love doing this – and the income it provides for house projects!

6. My Running Buddy Amy and I continue our version of Couch to 5K.  We’re now running 25 minutes.  I’d love to find a weekend to do another 5K to see if we could complete it, but we’ve both been booked on the weekends.  I can’t believe the difference of having someone to do this with.  If you want to start a program, GET A BUDDY! (who will also make it a priority).  I personally have a ways to go on the weight-loss front, but at least it’s a start.

7. The team here at The Good Stuff Guide is looking into writing Good Stuff Guide-themed book/books.  We’re not sure at this point if it will be a Coffee table style or a single themed book, but I’m clearing my plate of a lot of volunteer activities to set to work on this.  If you have ideas, or things you’d like to see, let us know!!

8. Here’s the kicker – The Good Stuff Guide has turned 4 years old this month, and we are just 13 posts shy of 1000 posts!  It’s been an incredible journey and we are really grateful to all of you – both readers with us from the beginning and those who have just joined.  What a great sharing of ideas this has been.  I really look forward to where will be in the future (and hope you’ll be with us)!

So what’s been new with you?  We really want to know!

Happy birthday to us! Cathy I had a cupcake at 9:30 today – now I have a reason 🙂 Heidi – those coaches are heroic! Love the visual. And I am guilty too – Ronald is doing soccer baseball and tennis. But he loves it and wants to do it. I think when they get older they will have to do one sport per season – for now he just plays everything! 🙂
