Birthday Party, Heidi-style

June 3, 2010

Yesterday we celebrated my elder adorable’s 5th birthday with a backyard soiree for his preschool class.

(Heaven help me)

Here’s the thing: he shares a birthday with a classmate, so we hosted a joint party.  Friends, I highly recommend this.

The great mommy took care of all the paper goods, drinks and goodie bags, and wahoo, that took a big load off.

So this is how we filled 90 minutes.

Here’s the Running Man (red shirt) in all his glory.  He rocks at coming up with games on the fly.

They all involve this:

Hello sugar-high.

My favorite of his games involved 2 hula hoops.  He spread candy out on the lawn and lined the adorables up into 2 lines.  The adorable in the front of the line threw his hula hoop and claimed all the candy within the hoop.  Move to end of line and repeat.  Easy, right?

Here’s another hit of a game:

(and no this isn’t just a photo of my fence)

This is a cookie eating game.

Note to self: hang them lower.

We also had a craft table.

Younger adorable quietly strung beads there for a while.  All the little girl adorables dressed to the nines (be still my heart) congregated here.

And the piece de resistance:

With birthdays falling in June and September, we’re planning on years of backyard birthday fun with this.

(And incidentally, this bounce house equaled the price of one store-type birthday party.)

And hooray we all survived, were exhausted and had plenty of fun!

Looks like so much fun! That cookie part just cracked me up! Did they ever manage to eat them?

Beautiful job! Backyard parties make me happy. I’m going to try to figure out a way to link this in my party theme ideas site, Any Reason for Cake. http://www.anyreasonforcake.com/index.html

The games are great! We are hoping to co-host a party next year – another child in my son’s class has a birthday the day after his. So much easier that way!

We have done a combined birthday party with a little friend every year so far too. It definitely cuts costs in a big way!!

I love the photo of the cookie game (and the idea too!). How simple and fun. I know some grown-ups who would like that game too.
