(Giveaway) The Gift of Giving

December 7, 2012

Written by MarykateOMalley, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne, PA

There is something to be said for those gifts that are a two in one. It is the icing on the cake, the bases are loaded home run, the ultimate feel good shopping experience. Let me explain, in the quaint harbor town of Port Washington, NY there is a bakery called Sweet Comfort that makes the most mouth watering, every calorie is worth it baked goods. And they employee a staff with developmental disabilities. My sister and her wonderful mother in law always bring treats from this amazing bakery for every celebration. It’s a win win – we get to enjoy something delicious and they support a good cause.

I have highlighted some of my favorite give – and give some more – gifts!

  • Cedar Creek Coffee – I am a coffee lover. As in I can’t function in the morning without it. My oldest will sometimes say – “Mom, I think you need your coffee” when I am having a pre-caffeinated moment (see: can’t function without it). Cedar Creek coffee also makes a point to employee and support those with disabilities. I especially love their Hazelnut and Highlander Grogg.

  • Heifer International – My daughter was given a book and gift from this organization (also from my sister’s wonderful mother in law – she is one kind lady!). It was so great because the gift was a goat to a family who depended upon it for their survival. And in addition, she gave her a wonderful book called Beatrice’s Goat that told the story and illustrated how a goat could support an entire family in ways I could never imagine. There was a lesson and gift in it for everyone.

  • Green Kid Crafts – “Awesome” is how my 7 year old son described the Dinosaur Discovery box. Need I say more? He decided on an elephant instead of a dinosaur with the modeling clay – he likes to think outside the box (pun intended). Every month your child will enjoy creative and eco friendly crafts that are fresh, fun and interactive. This company uses recyclable materials so there is the benefit of a fun art project, while, as I like to tell my children,  they are “doing something kind for the earth”. And one lucky winner will win a Craft Discovery Box – details below!

  • And there are so many others – I love all the Holiday Bazaars this time of year that benefit schools and hospitals. There are many religious organizations that have Craft Fairs for workers who need the work, and they support them through groups such as Serrv and Catholic Relief Services.

  • And finally – when you are sending that card – remember our troops! Click here to find out more A Million Thanks!

And now, the moment you have all been waiting for (drumroll please)….

I LOVE Heifer International. We met Beatrice one year, she spoke to the kids at our church. She is WONDERFUL!!!!! My FIL calls my MIL “chickie” so one year we gave her the gift of a donation of a cluck of chicks.

I love gifts that give back! My favorite right now is a fundraiser for a friend who is adopting. An etsy seller is making “Hearts for Pie” – and I’ve ordered some as our “yearly ornament” for 2012. (We get new ones to add to our collection each year – one for each of our kids, and one for my husband and I to share.)

Thank you for all of the wonderful idea!
