Back to School 101

September 13, 2013

Written by Marykate OMalley, mother of three wonderful children, Gladwyne PA

With the back to school mayhem and focus on education, here are some of the things I have learned lately that I thought I would share with you lovely readers. Students, take out your notebooks and pencils, it is time to take copious notes.

1. If there is a stray cat and you leave it milk, it will return over and over again to your back step. And then you will feel guilty and start to buy cat food. And the cat will appear every morning and night. And although it is a stray, don’t kid yourself, you have a cat.

2. I have learned not to lean over the grill while trying to ignite it with a gas lighter. Because POOF it will suddenly ignite and you will scream and a neighbor from over the fence will scream back “what?!” because she heard you and yes your hair is singed.

3. That back to school rocks my world. Despite the preparation, and the calendars and the lists and the lists and the lists. It takes me about a week or 2 to catch up and I eventually adjust. I am a week delayed person. It is all that sand in my brain. It takes time to shift out.

4. That life is the most surprising adventure of all. That everything I thought would happen in my life didn’t and everything I didn’t think would happen did. I have learned to let go and let God.

5. That when you are sick or tired or had a challenging day, despite your age, hearing Mom on the other end of the line always does the trick.

6. That there are always the nay sayers – the “you can’t do that” and “it’s never going to work” and “someone already tried that and it didn’t happen because”… Don’t ever, ever, listen to them.

7. That everything tastes good with nutella. Everything.

8. That a good book is good company.

9. That Downton Abbey is addicting.

10. That if you pull something in your arm doing yoga, and don’t give it time to heal because your one class a week is sacred – it will not heal. Even if you use icy heat. Even if you wear an arm brace. And if you are me, you don’t seem to learn this lesson.
