Chris Van Dusen {Author Visit}

February 5, 2013

We here at The Good Stuff Guide have a small obsession with the writing of Chris Van Dusen.

It’s not just Sarah and me: The Running Man, and my 2 boys are HUGE fans.  His are THE most beloved books at our home.

You’ve probably heard him mentioned here:

New Releases {Chris Van Dusen}, Brilliant Author Series: Chris Van Dusen, The 25 Best Children’s Picture Books, Learning to Ski With Mr. MageeThe Great Picture Books of Maine

(wow!  That’s a lot of mentions.)

At the end of last year, I was asked to spearhead the effort to bring an author to our school and given a nice budget to do so.  Naturally, I knew exactly who I wanted to come.

Since I didn’t want to steamroll the committee, I just handed over our collection of books, and kept my mouth shut.

This was really hard for me.  I know this will shock you, but when I get excited about something, I get really, really excited.

You’re so sweet to pretend you’re shocked.

Once the committee took a tour of Mr. Van Dusen’s books, they were just as excited as me.  Scout’s honor.

So the man himself came to our school to conduct five writing workshops to small groups of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders.

Friends, he was a HIT!

The students were absolutely captivated.

Here is Mr. Van Dusen sharing what I believe to be the 2 best pages in all of children’s literature.  It’s from The Circus Ship, my all-time favorite.

These students were enthralled and it pleases me to no end that they seemed to appreciate this wonderful opportunity.

    If he ever comes again, CALL ME!!!!!!!! My boys and I desperately want to be there! He is hands down our favorite author and illustrator of all time and I say that with a home collection of 500 picture books and a minimum of 50 checked out from the library at a time. He is a living treasure, we adore his work!

    I would also like to say that I hope the girl in the navy shirt and striped skirt got called on because she seriously has something she has got to say. 😉
